Merlewood is extremely lucky to be located close to 4 Championship Golf Courses, the most famous being the Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club which hosted the 2012 Open Golf Championship and the 2015 Walker Cup. However with the St Annes Old Links Course less than a mile away and Fairhaven Golf Club and Lytham Green Drive Golf Club both within 4 miles, you are in danger of being spoilt for choice in our golfer’s paradise. You could play a different course every day!
Royal Lytham and St. Annes is quite simply a stunning golf course – a true classic links that is away from the sea yet close enough for the sea breeze to have an effect on the game. It is renowned as a Course on which is it hard to scramble a good score, after all, there are 206 bunkers peppering the Fairways and surrounding the Greens. It has the perfect combination of wide fairways, length of rough and pace and quality of greens. It is a fine place to sense the history and traditions of the game and walk in the fairways of famous men.
St Annes Old Links is justly proud of its 6941 yard Par 72 Championship links course and welcomes the opportunity to share it with golfers from around the world. It is flatter and more expansive than its neighbours. It is a true test of your game and must be respected. Like all links courses the wind can have a huge impact on the way a course plays. However, the greens have an envious reputation of being the crème de la crème when it comes to putting surfaces in the UK and beyond.
Officially recognised as one of the finest Championship courses in the north of England, Fairhaven Golf Club offers golfers of all handicaps a beautiful place to play golf. Home to professional golf since 1934, Fairhaven has all the characteristics of a traditional links course and is immaculately kept from tee to green, allowing year-round golf.
‘Lytham Green Drive’ is an easy walking pleasant ‘Parkland Course’. Although being within a mile of the Irish Sea, it still retains its parkland characteristics with no strenuous hills. The course is ideal for all handicaps as it is particularly testing with rewards for the more venturous player but has allowances for shots by those of less ability. It has a reputation as probably the friendliest and most sociable golf club on the Fylde. You can be assured that a warm welcome and friendly atmosphere awaits you before and after the perfect round of golf.
The beauty of our seaside Links courses means that our local golf courses are able to offer year round play. Unlike many inland courses, our free draining courses make conditions ideal for winter golf. Buggies and trolleys are allowed all year round and play is always from tees (never mats) and always to greens.
If you fancy a more informal round of ‘Pitch and Putt’ you can always check out Mini Links on the Promenade which offers a challenging 18 hole par 3 Mini Links golf course, a fabulous 18 hole Putting Green and an entertaining 9 hole Crazy Golf also open all year. But rest assured that for any non-golfing partners left behind, the Fylde Coast offers plenty to keep you occupied too!
